I think you’re reaching when you claim that his success was necessary for the success of hip-hop. That’s like saying that the Beatles or Elvis were necessary for Nirvana — sure, it would have been a different world without the influence of these seminal artists — Nirvana’s work wouldn’t have been viewed as a *response*, at least. But it’s not like they wouldn’t have made an impression on their own.
